There is the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words". But this applies not for picture archiving. When it comes to archiving it is important to index image data comprehensive and efficiently, especially for further search operations.

IPTC-Indexing

The purpose of the IPTC-NAA-Standard (often just IPTC) is to save text information for image content within image files (like TIFF- or JPEG File Interchange Format files. It was defined around 1990 as Information Interchange Model (IIM). Text information are stored within the header of the file in a format defined by this standard.

The IPTC-NAA-Standard was developed by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) and the Newspaper Association of America (NAA). Basically, it fits all kind of media like texts, photos, graphics, audio or video. After all it was adapted by Adobe Systems for Photoshop and other companies for adding descriptive image text information.

Pixelboxx_IPTC-Writer_2This standard allows it to save hints for image rights, name of the author, title or keywords directly within the image file. This kind of saving meta data is standardized in image agencies and image archives. With the proper programs, it is easy to find needed data, enriched with this kind of information by searching for certain keywords. This is how the administration and handling of large image archives can be facilitated.

The
"file information" of Photoshop are created within the file as IPTC-Format as well, enabling the Pixelboxx IPTC Writer to read them and vice versa. The advantages of the IPTC Writer are its configurability, the support of fixed value fields and the fact that it does not have to recode JPG-files when writing, and therefore preventing a quality loss.

In the meantime, NewsML was suggested to replace IPTC-NAA as new exchange format. Furthermore, besides the IPTC-NAA-Standard, the XMP-Format storing (Extensible meta data platform) has established.

The Web Gallery

The new Web Gallery is a new high light, which is easy to access via the IPTC Writer Menu. An editable Web Gallery is created of all images within the image list of the IPTC Writers. The rendering size is variable, a zoom is included and it is possible to create slide shows from selections. The created Web Gallery can be easily presented on your web site.

GPS-Positioning

It is possible to add GPS positions to images. To do this, you need a GPS tracker, saving the current GPS position continuously within a ".gpx" file while the pictures are taken. With the folder path available where the ".gpx" file is stored, as well as the time zone where the picture was taken, the IPTC Writer adds fully automated the Exif-Meta data to the pictures.
